DGA Calendar

DGA a NJ Golf Club

2013

December 28 - Spooky Brook

Once again, we had a one hour frost delay at Spooky Brook.  But then, all groups played in less that 3 hours 45 minutes.  We played "Any Hole" as a way to speed up play and mitigate the strange bounces caused by frozen greens.  We figure it cut 15-20 minutes off the round...and an average of 3-4 shots on scores.  Dennis Grote shot Net 65 for the win.  Doug Conway's last shot of the year found the hole on the 18th green from 80 yards with a pitching wedge for an EAGLE!!!

December 27 - Quail Brook

After a one hour frost delay, the DGA was the first two groups out...and the two threesomes played in less than 3 3/4 hours.  The greens were not as bumpy as expected but they were frozen and a bit slow.  Bob Babetski won with a net 69.

December 26 - Spooky Brook

It was a cloudy and cold day at Spooky Brook for this DGA foursome.  We had a snow shower on the back 9 too in addition to frozen greens.  Bob Babetski and Doug Conway tied for 1st with net 74.  The Highlight of the day?  "When is a hole-in-one not a hole-in-one?"...When Bob Babetski's tee shot on #16 bounced onto the green and rolled inthe hole cut on the front left side of the green.  Too bad the flagstick was in the hole on the front right side of the green....about 20 feet away!  Congratulations, Bob, on this amazing feat!!!!

December 21 - Cream Ridge

A beautiful day, got to 60 degrees.  Min Minutello and Mansour Rismanchi nosed out Jim Petronchak with net 66's.  The first foursome all shot in the net 60's.  Rich Fitzgerald had a net 28 on the front 9 but faltered to record a Johnny with a net 41 on the back 9.  An interesting sidebit.  Larry Thiry didn't arrive in time (SHOCKER!) to tee off with the last group, so after completing #18, George Keller went with him as a marker to play 1, 2 and 3.  On the first hole, Larry hits his 2nd shot and couldn't find his ball.  Had to take a penalty and made an 8....good marker, George!

December 7 - Spooky Brook

No frost delay.  A little soft turf, but otherwise an ok day.  Min Minutello nipped out five others with a 69, but Petro was the big winner as money was spread around.

November 30 - Quail Brook

After a lengthy frost delay, same result, Babo romps.

November 29 - Cream Ridge

We had a 30 minute frost delay at Cream Ridge.  The day was sunny but cold (30's).  Some greens were frozen and some were not.  Through all that, John Rutigliano won for the 3rd round in a row with a net 71.  He nipped Bob Babetski by 1 shot.  However, JRut was oblivious to the fact that a twosome played through his group starting on the back 9.  He didn't see them go through....and didn't see them in front of him.

November 23 - Spooky Brook

A chilly and windy day.  Babo continued his winning ways but this time he had company in the person of Mansour as both nipped Schuler with net 70's.

November 18 - Rutgers

Three DGAer's played golf with a friend of Mark Schuler's at Rutgers.  Nice November day temps in the 60's with 20+ mph winds.  Course was in great shape.  Jim Rinaldi squeaks out a 2 shot win after Mark Schuler takes a 9 on the 12th hole.

November 17 - Spooky Brook

The Match Play Championship was finally decided. Reese Evans and Ron Emma played their match today at Spooky Brook. The weather was mild for November but it was cloudy and misty at times. Reese had jumped out to the early lead but through 5 holes it was even. Reese won the 6th hole and never looked back. He birdied the par 5, 13th hole to get to 4 up. They tied 14 and they both parred 15 where Reese closed out the match and won the championship 4 and 3. Congratulations to Reese Evans. He is the Match Play Champion to add to his Vardon Trophy.

It was a threesome today and John Rutigliano now has back to back wins. He had a strong back nine with a net 34 and won the back, net birdies, net eagles and actually tied birdies. Reese had 3 greenies.

November 16 - Quail Brook

Morning rain stopped before we teed off, then sun and 60's for a nice day of golf.  No Net 60 this week.  But Bob Babetski shot net 61....to win by 8 shots over Schuler, Ceglia Sr and Rinaldi.

November 9 - Spooky Brook

After about a 45 minute delay, a rather decent day.  Once again a net 60 is the winner, although this one took some time to decide.  There was some debate over a 59 or a 60 by Des Sinclair.  The score cards were a bit f****d up.  Anyhow, it was a 2 shot victory Babo's 62.  Des had 15 nets and 5 net eagles.

November 6, 2013 - Galloping Hill

Three stalwart DGA'ers played the new Galloping Hill golf course at Reese's invitation.  We paid $41/man for green fees, cart and a bowl of chili after the round.  For the second consecutive DGA round, the winner shot net 60!  This round's winner was Frank Thiry who shot a net 26-34=60 matching Ron Ceglia Sr's 27-33=60 this past Saturday.  Of course Ron shot gross 71 while FT shot gross 91.

November 2, 2013 - Quail Brook

The Greens were aerated, sandy and dewy making them very slow.  This did seem to bother Ron Ceglia Sr as he shot a 1 under par Gross 71 for a Net 60!!!  It appears a lot of guys like Winter Rules and their handicaps, the beer line was 2 under.

October 30 - Heron Glen

We got the final handicap round of the year in with minutes to spare before sunset at Heron Glen.  Frank Thiry-DGA shot net 73 for a 2 shot win over Doug Conway.

October 27 - Twisted Dunes

John Rutigliano surprised even himself with a 3 shot win over Reese Evans at Twisted Dunes.  Like the previous 2 days, it was sunny, 50's and windy with gusts over 20 mph at times.  The course was a lot of fun to play with three of the four par 3's playing over hazards and quite long...which is why 8 of the 11 players tied with 1 greenie.

October 26 - Green Knoll

After a 90 minute frost delay, we went off on the back 9 at Green Knoll on a very windy day.  Shane DeLeon shoots Net par and wins by 1 stroke over Price and Wolters.  Every player except one had at least a piece of a Pot.  Des suggested that we go to Green Knoll Grille after the round for some eye candy.  We get there and the bartender is a DUDE!!  We're not sure if Des knew this or not.

October 26 - Shore Gate

The magic continues....Doug Conway shot a net 73 at Shore Gate for a 1 shot win over Reese Evans.  And Doug made a 3 foot putt on 18 for a par to win Partners with Larry Thiry over Ron Emma and Reese Evans in the Partners Final via the tiebreaker.  There were 3 Johnnys (George Nolan, Jim Petronchak and Frank Thiry), 1 Super Johnny (Joe Musella), and 1 Mega Johnny (Ron Emma).

October 25 - Stone Harbor

Day 1 of the Atlantic City trip found sunny but windy conditions at Stone Harbor.  Doug Conway continued his streak with a net 75 to win by 1 shot over George Nolan and George Keller.  Wally Heda had the only Johnny (62-50).  Wally also had hole scores to cover the entire Yankee lineup plus the bench (4-11 Lou Gerhig thru Hector Lopez) plus 15 & 16 - Thurman Munson & Whitey Ford)

October 19, 2013 - Quail Brook

Schuler and Sinclair not only share a bed at Innisbrook (see Joe M. picture), they also share First Place with Net 66's this week at Quail Brook.  In possibly a DGA first, Dave Perry takes an unplayable with the wrong ball!  After taking an unplayable near the green, he hits the ball onto the green only to discover that it wasn't his ball.

October 15, 2013 - Spooky Brook

4 DGA played in the Spooky Brook Senior League Team season ending event at Spooky Brook.  Ron Ceglia Sr had 3 Birdies for 6 Net Birdies and 3 Net Eagles....but didn't do much else on the other holes (1 additional Net Birdie).  Mark Schuler shot Net 69 for the win.

October 5 - 12, 2013 - Fall Classic at Innisbrook

The Fall Classic trip to Innisbrook was very successful.  The weather was great except for rain on two holes on Monday.  The additional events (Better Ball, Ryder Cup and 4 Man Scramble) were a lot of fun.  The results of all the events are as follows:

Better Ball - Dave Perry and Shane DeLeon shot net 63 for a 2 shot win on the Island Course.
Individual Tournament - Doug Conway shot net 303 for the four day tournament and a 4 shot win.
Ryder Cup - The North defended their 2012 title with a 12.5 to 9.5 win on the North Course.
4 Man Scramble - Ron Ceglia, Dave Perry, Joe Musella and Larry Thiry shot 9 Under 62 on the Copperhead Course
Par 3 Net - Shane DeLeon won with Net 51 on the 19 Par 3's
Par 3 Gross - Jim Petronchak won with Gross 69 on the 19 Par 3's

October 12, 2013 - Spooky Brook

6 DGA guys who weren't in Florida played a slow round at Spooky Brook.  Mansour Rismanchi romped to an 11 shot win and made it look easy.  The 5 of us look forward to our drink during a future weekend since we didn't go to the bar.  Jim Rinaldi came in 3rd - one behind Dan.  Gucci made his last appearance before his trip south.

October 10, 2013 - Innisbrook Copperhead

Shane DeLeon continued his improved play and won with a net 72 at Innisbrook Copperhead.  Doug Conway's net 75 gave him a 4 day total of 303 and a 4 shot win in the Individual Tournament.

October 9, 2013 - TPC Tampa

Jim Petronchak shot net 74 at TPC Tampa for the win.

October 9, 2013 - Innisbrook South

It was "Moving Day" during the Fall Classic (Day 3) at Innisbrook South.  Shane DeLeon shot Net 69 to win by 3 shots over Jim Petronchak.  There were three 74's, four 75's and two 77's following those people...so there wasn't as much movement as expected.

October 8, 2013 - Innisbrook Copperhead

Des Sinclair came to life with a net 70 and a 4 shot win over Mike Rolph at Innisbrook - Copperhead.

October 7, 2013 - Innisbrook South

Dave Perry rebounded from his bad morning round to win with a net 71 on Innisbrook South.

October 7, 2013 - Innisbrook - North

Mike Jeffries shot Net 74 and nipped Luke Wolters by 1 shot at Innisbrook - North.  Only 5 DGA members broke Net 80.

October 6, 2013 - Innisbrook Island

Dave Perry and Shane DeLeon partnered to win the Better Ball event at Innisbrook Island with a net 63....and a 2 shot win over Luke Wolters and Joe Musella.  Jim Petronchak EAGLED the par 5 11th hole with a Driver, 5 Iron and 18 foot putt.

October 5, 2013 - Green Knoll

7 DGA guys who weren't in Florida played a quick 4 hour round at Green Knoll.  Mansour Rismanchi nipped Jim Rinaldi by 2 shots.

October 5, 2013 - Innisbrook Island

Dave Perry stepped off the plane and shot a sub 80 round on the very tough Innisbrook - Island course.  His net 64 gave him an 8 shot win over Frank Thiry.  Shane DeLeon had a Super Johnny (50-31).

October 4, 2013 - Heritage Isles

Mike Rolph shot net 75 for the win at Heritage Isles.

October 3, 2013 - Rose Hill

Frank Thiry shot net 73 to defeat Larry Thiry and Min Minutello at Rose Hill in South Carolina.

October 2, 2013 - Heron Glen

It was a top 10 weather day at Heron Glen.  Sunny, mid 80's with a little breeze to keep us comfortable.  The greens were as fast as we've seen them and a little dried out.  The rest of the course was in good condition.  Ron Emma had a 5 shot win over Shane DeLeon.  Jim Rinaldi had a nice round going until Shane attacked him with the flag on #15?  Not exactly sure what happened but rumor has it that Jim made a 12 on #16.  Another interesting fact was Dan Price getting 500 of those brown "burrs" on his yellow pants and white socks looking for his tee shot on #12.  We asked him if he wanted to look for it....it was deep and he was determined and looked for at least a "Dave Perry" 5 minutes.  It took him 5 holes to get them off....we told him to forget the socks, but he got them all off the socks also!

September 28, 2013 - Quail Brook

Mansour Rismanchi nipped Larry Thiry and Jim Rinaldi by one shot at Quail Brook.  This was the final round for handicaps before Innisbrook.

September 25, 2013 - Warrenbrook

A beautiful day at Warrenbrook, but not without soe turmoil.  A twosome showed up on the 14th tee and wanted to play thru.  Schuler, Rinaldi, Price and Jeffries said "Sorry"!  Then they tried the same thing with the Wolters, DeLeon, Keller and Minutello group.  The response was "NFW"!  And we played on.  We were then approached at the clubhouse by the twosome and a staff member seeking an apology.  I walked away.  As for golf, Dan Price nipped Shane and Luke by one stroke, but Shane picked up most money.

September 21, 2013 - Quail Brook

Rich Fitzgerald is unstoppable!  One week after willing the World Series Championship, Rich won at Quail Brookwith a Net 65 which was one shot better than George Keller.  There were three Johnnys....Bob Babetski (33-44), Shane DeLeon (35-46) and Larry Thiry (39-50).

September 20, 2013 - Beacon Hill

Thank you Larry Thiry for hosting a foursome at Beacon Hill.  It was a beautiful, sunny day and the course lived up to its reputation as being tough.  We had a total of 10 pars in 72 holes.  Larry was the perfect host and let all of us beat him.  Frank Thiry-DGA shot net 78 to win by 2 shots.

September 18, 2013 - Warrenbrook

Four members played Warrenbrook on Wednesday afternoon.  George Keller came in 1st with a Net 70.

September 14, 2013 - Great Bear

It was a good day at Great Bear for World Series Day.  The conditions were cloudy and cool with a constant breeze....and the scores were bot real good and real bad.  Rich Fitzgerald captured his 1st World Series Championship on his 4th try by shooting a Net 76 and winning in a one hole playoff with Ron Emma.  Congratulations, Rich!!!  He and Ron were 9 shots ahead of the 3rd place finished, Dave Perry.  Overall, Luke Wolters shot a spectacular Net 65 (Gross 79) to nip Frank Thiry-DGA by 1 shot.  The Beer Line was Net 80!!!  Only five players broke net par....everyone else was Net 74 (3 over net par) and higher....much higher!  In Partners, Larry Thiry and Doug Conway reached the Finals with an upset of the four-time defending champions, The Bobbies.  Larry and Doug held on to win +3 as the match was decided on the 18th hole.  Thanks to John Rutigliano and John DeSimone for a great day at Great Bear!

September 13, 2013 - Great Bear

The DGA played a "practice round" at Great Bear.  Larry Thiry won by 2 shots over Dave Perry with a Net 72.  Dave could have been a contender if he hadn't finished 9, 8 on the last 2 holes in the dark.  Rich Fitzgerald could have won if he hadn't finished 10, 11 on the same two holes in the dark.  Rich had two Net 1's on his card.  Joe Musella EAGLED #15 with a driver, 3 hybrid and a 4 foot putt.

September 11, 2013 - Heron Glen

It was hot & humid at Heron Glen and most of us struggled with the weather and our own tempers. Nothing seemed to bother Reese Evans as he won the day with a two shot win over Mark Schuler, won his match 4 & 3 over Jim Rinaldi and with his win, he gets into World Series. Rumor has it that Mike Rolph took 5 of his equity strokes on the par3 15 hole....he made a 12 after hitting 4 straight balls OB and then hitting the green with his 5th tee shot.

September 7, 2013 - Green Knoll

A red Letter weather day. Surprisingly there were not more low scores. Min Minutello was low by two strokes over G. Keller, Dennis Grote and Des Sinclair. A Johnnie for J. Rut and Fitz and Schuler. A Super Johnnie for Mansour. The R.E./R.E. boys managed to win their partners match over Shawn and G. Keller, but I don't know the score [+11]. Babo has managed to overcome his phobia of the sixth hole. He parred it.

September 4, 2013 - Heron Glen

It was a top ten weather day although it was very windy…unfortunately, there were some slow players in front of us…we waited on just about every shot. Ron Emma played steady golf for a two shot win over Mark Schuler but no one broke net par. Mark won more "net" money as Ron spent $39 for his round at Friday's. Mike Rolph walked off a plane and right to the golf course...welcome back Mike!

September 2, 2013

It started out raining for the first few holes at Neshanic Valley but then it cleared up and we all finished by 12:10pm.  Dave "Mr Neshanic" Perry won as usual with a net 70 for a 5 shot win.

August 31, 2013 - Quail Brook

It was a cloudy, warm day at Quail Brook and once again the tees were way up and the scores were low. Larry Thiry made the best of it shooting a Net 59 (Gross 83). Larry shot a Net 24 on the front and cooled off on the back with a Net 35 (a Bad Johnny I might add). He had 14 Net Birdies and 3 Net Eagles. The beer line was Net 72.

In match play Ron Emma defeated Bob Babetski 5 & 4 to get his first trip to the Match Play finals. He will meet the winner of Reese Evans and Jim Rinaldi who both won their matches, Reese defeated Shane DeLeon 5 & 3 and Jim defeated John Rutigliano 3 & 2.

Worth Mentioning:
There have been 4 sub-Net 60 rounds this year and if you include the Net 60 rounds there have been a total of 9. The biggest victim of this phenomenon is Ron Ceglia Sr. Yesterday, Ron Ceglia Sr finishes with a Gross 73/Net 63 and came in second. On July 27th, again at Quail Brook, Ron Ceglia Sr scores another Gross 73 this time for a Net 60 and came in second to Doug Conway who also shot a Net 59. I guess Ron just can't play well enough at Quail Brook.

August 29, 2013

Three of the DGA's more stellar members introduced themselves to Great Bear Club.  The day became historic before the first tee shot in that it marked the first time in Fitz's career that he gave away shots to all DGA competitors in his group.
August 28, 2013

The rain showers didn't dampen Ron Emma's game one bit at Heron Glen.  He shot a career best 79 gross, net 62 and walks away with top money.  He won both the 9 hole nassaus and won or shared in three other pots.
Overall, there were 3 net scores in the 60s,. 3 scores in the 70s, and eight at 80 and above., making net 80 the beers line.....Only in the DGA.

August 24, 2013

Weather-wise the day was a 10 but the scores were not that perfect as Dom Tucci was the only player to shoot in the sixties with a net 69 at Spooky Brook getting the victory by 2 shots over Dave Perry, who was the only other player to break net par.

August 21, 2013

Mattawang seems to have been very tough for everyone except Dave "Wednesday" Perry.  Dave shote a net 71 for a 4 shot win over Mike Jeffries.  Greg Cavallo had a Johnny (37-47).

August 17, 2013

It was a top 10 weather day at Green Knoll.   It started out a bit crisp, but warmed up quickly and was very pleasant all day. Ed Korleski walked away with an easy three shot win that could have been more if he could make a few two foot putts. For a change there wasn’t any matches to report. Luke and Rutigs both had a good Johnny (48-36) and Rutigs ((42-31)...everyone and their sister had 1 birdie...what happened Jim? Hey Ed, maybe you should have had Greg buy part of the round...

August 14, 2013

The wind was certainly a factor for most of the 11 that played Neshanic Valley (M/L).  Apparently, it didn't bother Ron Ceglia, Sr. who blew away the field with a net 66 and takes home top money honors.  Dan Price finished second and recorded the only other below net par.
Ron and Dan won 1st and 2nd place on both the 9-hole nassaus, but Ron shared in the Birdies (2) and Net Birdies pots (9).
GK3 recorded the only Johnny round - a bad one at that.  The 5 shots it took to get out of the thick stuff behind the 15th green (Lake #6) had something to do with it.

August 11, 2013

It was a beautiful if overcast day and 4 DGAers found their way to Mt Airy Golf Club.  Shane DeLeon nipped Larry Thiry by 3 shots.

August 10, 2013 - World Series #4

Rich Fitzgerald took the final place in World Series at Quail Brook with a net 65 to nip Luke Wolters by one shot. Rumors had it that it could have been a net 58....Bob Babetski took the most money because he made an eagle on 17 and he won the front. Bob hit an 8 iron from 135 and it went in! We were looking everywhere for it and Min says did you look in the CUP!!??!!...Bob defeated George Keller with that shot for a 3 & 1 victory after being up 5 at one point in the match. Ron Emma defeated Min 2 & 1 in their match.

August 7, 2013

The Blue Tees at Heron Glen finally showed their teeth as Dan Price nipped Des Sinclair by 1 shot with a net 72.  Net 79 got out of Beers.

August 3, 2013

It was a cool, rainy day at Warrenbrook, but that didn't stop Greg Cavallo from shooting net 67 and winning by 1 shot over Larry Thiry.  Greg has a big payday as he also won the front 9 (30) and the Net Birdie (11) and Net Eagle (4) pots.   Only the top 6 finishers shot net par or better, resulting in the beers line to be net 75.

Ron Ceglia, Jr, shot gross 39, net 31 on the front and walks away with no money.  His back nine was a different story as he finishes with a Bad Johnny.  Ed Korleski also finished with a Bad Johnny, but barely.,

In Parters Match, Bob Babetski and Bob Nowark beat Mark Schuler and Des Sinclair +9.  The Bobby's won 6 out of 8 points on holes 10 through 13 and closed the match on the 14th hole even with losing a point.

July 31, 2013

It was a nice weather day at Flanders Valley (Red/Gold) but the slow play (groups in front of us) and slow greens affected everyone.  Des Sinclair and Ron Ceglia Jr had Net 69s to tie for 1st.  Luke Wolters had 3 birdies (2 of which were chip ins) and 3 net eagles....and a bad Johnny (32-42).  Dan Price had a chip in birdie and a bad Johnny (32-43).  Coincidence?

July 29, 2013

Three DGA's checked out Pebble Creek and although the course was on the shorter side, it had enough going on (doglegs, trees, double doglegs, sand traps, etc.) that we'd go back. We'd play the blue tees if we go back.  Besides, Ron Emma almost got hit with a golf ball and a minor confrontation (with someone who could have eaten any of us...once he got up close), it was a great day.  Course was in good condition.  One highlight of the day was the bar afterwards...the bar - Huddy's Inn (about a mile away) and the course are owned by the same person and gives one free beer if you show your scorecard.  Ron Emma shot Net 64 to take all but one pot.

July 27, 2013

Once again, there were phenomenal low scores at Quail Brook.  Doug Conway shot a career best 1 over par 73 (bogeyed the 18th hole) for a Net 59 to nip Ron Ceglia Sr (who also shot 73 Gross) by 1 shot.  Doug had a Net 29 on the front 9....and Mansour Rismanchi nipped Ron Ceglia Sr by 1 shot on the back with a Net 27 to tie the all time low Back 9 Net Score on Quail Brook.  Dan Price and Doug shot Net 30 on the back and didn't cash.  Mansour chipped in for par on 18 to get his 14th Net Birdie and 4th Net Eagle to win those pots.  Jim Petronchak made 4 birdies once again.  In Match Play, Ron Emma overcame 21 shots to defeat Wally Heda 2 & 1.  Min Minutello romped (his words) in gaining a forfeit victory from an injured Bruce Rapp.  In Partners, Doug Conway and Larry Thiry beat Jim Petronchak and Mike Rolph +11 as Larry made the clinching putt on #13.

July 25, 2013

Reese Evans romped by 5 shots at Quail Brook with a net 68.  Reese also defeated Larry Thiry 2 Up in Match Play.  Ron Ceglia Jr had a "bad" Johnny (32-44)

July 24, 2013

A very nice day at Heron Glen...sunny and comfortable.  The red hot Mike Rolph was in full force and Jim "I Love 2nd Place" Rinaldi also made an appearance.  Greg Cavallo also tied for second, but might have tied for first if he didn't take 2 penalty shots on the first hole.  Ed found Greg's tee shot about 15 seconds after Greg dropped (and took the two stroke penalty).  Jim Petronchak continued his hot play with four more birdies.  Net par loses money again!

 July 20, 2013

Another hot and humid day at Neshanic Valley (Ridge/Lake) but not the low scores as recently posted.  Lots of equities, 39, led by Shane's 11.  One Johnny by Petro.  Luke and Dave Perry shared the lead with 71's.  Manny got nipped out by one.

July 17, 2013

The temperatures soared into the upper 90's and we played the blue tees (6500 yards) at Heron Glen.  Jim Petronchak made 5 birdies to tie the DGA record for birdies in a round and shot 1 under par 71 for a net 66....and a tie with Mike Jeffries for 1st place.

July 13, 2013 - World Series #3

It was a day of intermittent showers throughout the round at Green Knoll.  The prevailing thought was that scores would be higher than they have been the last few weeks....and except for 1 golfer, that proved true.  That one golfer was Wally Heda who set some new DGA scoring records with a Net 26 on the Green Knoll Front 9 (breaking his own record of Net 27 set in July, 2005) and an all time DGA scoring record of Net 54 (breaking his own record of Net 55 set in June, 2005 at Warrenbrook).  Wally had a"net zero" on the Par 3 7th hole when his tee shot ended less than 1 foot to the right of the hole for a tap in birdie.  Larry Thiry commented that there wasn't enough room in the little scorecard box for Wally's 3 Net Birdies, 2 Net Eagles, 1 Birdie and 1 Greenie on that hole.  Jim Petronchak continued his birdie binge with 4 more birdies.  Jim's Net 30 (gross 33 - 2 under par) wasn't good enough to cash on the Back 9 as Wally had a Net 28 and John Rutigliano had a Net 29.  On the other side of the scoring spectrum, the 6th hole still has Bob Babetski's number....this time Bob had a 20 (several weeks ago, he had a 21 and last year he had a 19).  Further compounding the problem was that Bob had an 11 on the previous hole!.  Bob did redeem himself with a "good" Mega Johnny (56-33).  John Rutigliano had a "good" Johnny (40-29).

July 10, 2013 -  Heron Glen

"Nine DGAers made the trip to Heron Glen and found the course quite empty. George Keller led the way with a Net 66 to nip out Dan Price by 1 shot and Mike Rolph by 2. George also EAGLED the short par 5, 16th hole (449 yds). He hit wedge from 55 yds. and the ball disappeared into the hole on the 3rd hop. George didn't see the result but was told by his playing partners.

If it wasn't for George's Eagle, Mike Rolph would have won the most money as he won the front 9, and won or shared in 4 Pots.

Interestingly, the average gross score for the DGA on that hole was about 1/2 shot above par (2 birdies, 1 par, 3 bogeys, 1 dble bogey, and 1 triple bogey. In comparison, the 9 of us had the same exact average gross score on the short par 4, 12th hole (288 yds). There was one greenie recorded on the 12th hole by Ron Ceglia, Jr..

July 9, 2013

Mike Rolph and Ron Ceglia Sr tie for 1st with Net 66 at Knoll West (Doiley Open)

July 6, 2013 - Warrenbrook

A small group for a Saturday at Warrenbrook. The weather was very hot and humid. Larry Thiry was a one shot winner today with a net 60. He came in first on the back with a net 29 and tied for second on the front with a net 31. He had 15 net birdies and 4 net eagles. That heavy handicap sure comes in handy.

In match play George Keller beat Jim Petronchak 5 & 3 and moves into the quarter finals to meet Bob Babetski.

Honorable Mentions
Mike Rolph shot a gross 77 for a net 61 but finishing second. He won the front with a net 29 and came in second on the back with a net 32. Jim Petronchak birdie 4 out of his last 11 holes.

Shot of the Day
Congratulations to Bob Babetski for his Eagle on number 14. If I am not mistaken it was driver, 5 iron. His drive was in the right rough. His 5 iron shot got to the front of the green, rolled and died right into the cup. His first question to the foursome was "Did it go in?", after he was told yes his next question was "How many people are playing today?". It was his first eagle. Congratulations again.

July 3, 2013 - Neshanic Valley M/L

We had all kinds of weather at Neshanic, rain, clouds and sun. As no surprise to any of us, Dave Perry once again came away with the win on his home course. It was an impressive day considering his bad foot and he could barely walk. I think I did hear that at times he was assisted to and from the cart. Dave was steady with net 33's on the front and back. He also won net birdies and tied birdies and net eagles.

Noticeable Mentions:

Jim Rinaldi has once again finished second. By his own account he has done this 5 or 6 times this year. Always a bridesmaid never a bride. Hang in there Jim.

George Keller had a Bad Johnnie - 33-43.

PS- Minny, pretty quick with getting out the results, huh??? I knew I had it in me..

June 29, 2013

Hot and Muggy weather at Quail Brook as well as the scores.  Maybe it is time to think about the next set of tees?  Jim Rinaldi shot 74, net 61 and is nipped by Mike Jeffries with 60.  But Jim reaps the big money with most of the pots.  Wally Heda finally gets the victory over Luke Wolters 4 & 2.  He also took the Net Eagle pot with four.

June 26, 2013

Another hot and muggy day at Heron Glen....and Dave Perry is in supreme Wednesday mode.  Dave shot a career best gross 76 (net 60) for a 6 shot win over Ron Ceglia Sr.  The 11th hole (288 yards) was downwind and downhill.  The first group (Cavallo, Ceglia Sr, Conway and Smith) were all within 20 yards of the green with their drives and made 3 birdies....and Shawn almost chipped in for eagle....with his wedge!!!  There were 5 birdies overall on the 11th hole.

June 22, 2013 - Record Breaking Day

What can be said?  John Rutigliano set several DGA records at Spooky Brook with his Net 56 (Gross 82).  John shot Net 26 on the Front 9 and Net 56 overall to set new Spooky Brook records.  John had 20 Net Birdies to break the record of 18 held by Wally Heda (Warrenbrook - 6/11/2005).  John had 7 Net Eagles to tie John Perry's record at Olde Homestead (9/25/2004).  His Net Scorecard had 15 holes of Net 3 or better!  His Net 10 on the four Par 5's was better than his Net 12 on the four Par 3's!  Oh, and he 4 putt the 8yj hole for a double bogey or else he would have been lower!  And while wreaking havoc on the golf course, he beat Ed Korleski 7 & 5 in their Match.  It was amazing Ed kept it that close.  Lost in the craziness was Mike Rolph's Net 29 on the Front 9 and Des Sinclair's Net 29 on the Back 9.  Also, Jim Petronchak had 4 Birdies and George Keller had 4 Sandys.  In Match Play, Bob Babetski defeated Mike Jeffries 6 & 4.  In Partners, the RE's (Emma and Evans) edged Ron Ceglia Jr and Rich Fitzgerald +1.

June 19, 2013

Dave Perry, feeling more comfortable with his 16 handicap, breezed home by 5 strokes over Des on a sloppy, muddy track at Flanders Valley (White/Blue).  Des managed a Johnny (41-30).  Luke and Wally live to do it again as they managed another tie.  Manny managed an even round with his 44-45.

June 15, 2013 - Green Knoll

After all the rain this week we got a very nice day at Green Knoll except the course was very wet and the rough high in many spots. The scores were what you'd expect for those kinds of conditions especially playing everything down. It didn't seem to both Shane DeLeon. He won by six strokes with a net 63. He won the front with a net 30 and had 12 net birdies and 4 net eagles including a birdie on 15.

But the event of the day belongs to Bob Babetski and his 21 on hole #6. Bob had to lay up from around a tree after his drive and then proceeded to put 8 balls in the water. Once he finally got over he was 8 feet from the cup. Unfortunately he 2 putted. Kinda reminds you of this.

In match play Jim Rinaldi beats Bob Nowark on 18, 1 Up and in Partners Des Sinclair and Mark Schuler beat Commish Frankie Thiry and Wally Heda +5.

June 12, 2013

Mike Rolph won by 2 shots over Jim Rinaldi at Neshanic Valley (Meadow/Lake) on a sunny day in the 80's.

June 8, 2013

It was a rainy, wet week but the weather held out for World Series #2 at Warrenbrook. The course was wet but there were many good scores. Jim Petronchak shot 1 over par for a net 66 for the one shot victory. This is Jim's second consecutive year qualifying for World Series. George Keller was the second place finisher with a net 67 and maintained his lead for World Series aggregate. It was a very unusual day for Pots. There were 11 winners in the Birdie pot and 8 winners in the Greenie pot. Our only Johnnie was Wally Heda.

There were two matches played Min Minutello beat Frankie Thiry 1 Up. Luke Wolters and Wally Heda tied, 18 holes down, how many to go? They will have to reschedule.

The BBQ at John Rutigliano's after the round was a complete success. A special thanks to our cook Ron Ceglia Sr. who did another great job behind the grill.

June 5, 2013

It was a beautiful day at Heron Glen.  Frank Thiry-DGA "warmed up" for his upcoming Match vs Min Minutello by shooting Net 68 and gaining a 2 shot win over Dan Price.

June 3, 2013

The rains ended just before our round and started again just at the end of the round at Trump National Philadelphiafor the NJSGA Member Day.  We had 7 DGA Teams for the 2 Man Better Ball event.  Jim Rinaldi and Mike Jeffries shot Net 60 for the win and made 3 birdies on the back 9 to help their Net 27.  They won by 4 shots over Dave Perry and Larry Thiry.

June 1, 2013

Mark Schuler nipped Dave Perry and Jim Rinaldi by 1 shot with a net 70 at Neshanic Valley (Ridge/Lake).  It was a sunny, hot day and the rough was gnarly in places so scores were higher than expected.  Even though Mark finished 1st, he lost to Larry Thiry in Match Play 4 & 3.  Of course, Larry's score was much better until the match was over...and he finished 9, 5, 11 on the last 3 holes.  Larry had a "bad" Johnny (32-45).  Rich Fitzgerald had a "good" Johnny (50-35).  Dennis Grote had a "bad" Johnny (41-52).  In the other Individual Match, Bob Babetski romped over Des Sinclair 5 & 4.  In Partners, George Keller and Shawn Smith rallied to beat Dennis Grote and Bruce Rapp +3.

May 29, 2013

It was a sunny, hot day at Flanders Valley (Red/Gold).  Four (4) players tied with Net 72....although it should have been an easy win for Frank Thiry-DGA if he hadn't finished his "bad" Johnny (31-41) with a 10 and 9 on the last 2 holes.  Ron Ceglia Sr, Ron Emma and Reese Evans were the other 1st Place Finishers.  Wally Heda had the other "bad" Johnny (46-58).  In Match Play, Ron Emma defeated Tom Wrobel 4 & 2.

May 27, 2013

Bob Keller beat brother George by 3 shots at Mt. Airy Lodge on Memorial Day.

May 25, 2013

It was a cloudy, windy day with rain drop here and there at Green Knoll. The scores were as bad as the weather. There were only 2 players under net par. The beer line was net 79. Bruce Rapp and Mark Schuler tied for 1st with net 71's. Mark finished 2nd on both the front and back. Bruce came in first on the back a net 31. He also won the net birdie pot and was one of four to win the net eagle pot.

There were five matches today. Rutigliano beat Cavallo 2 & 1, Nowark beat Fitz 2 up, Evans beat Tucci 2 & 1, Rapp beat Ceglia Sr 4 & 3 and Petronchak beat Smith 4 & 3. Congratulations to all the winners.

Last but not least, message to Tom Wrobel - George Keller was a no show.

May 22, 2013

We had a top 10 day weather day at Neshanic Valley - Meadow/Lake. Once again Reese Evans walks from his car to the tee box and this time shoots even par 72 (gross). It was nice to watch. I told him that he’s no longer allowed to arrive an hour early for partners matches! Reese walked away with most of the winnings – the front, the back, the overall, birds and greens. Mike Jeffries came in second with a net 67 even though he made a 10 on lake #5. Shawn Smith also makes the write-up with a natural eagle on Lake #9 – Driver, 3 wood, putt with a small thank you to Ron Ceglia Jr for showing him the line.

May 18, 2013

We got a cloudy day with temps in the 60's and a little spritz of rain for our round at Quail Brook.  There was some incredible scoring as three players shot net 29 on the front nine (Bob Babetski, Mark Schuler and Larry Thiry) but only one (Bob Babetski) kept it going with a net 31 on the back for a total of Net 60.  Mark made an 8 on #17 on his way to a net 39 on the back.  Larry ran into trouble (the woods) on #17 and 18 and finished 10, 11 on the last 2 holes.  Mark (29-39) and Larry (29-43) had Johnnys.  Min Minutello shot better (Gross 80) than his age 82 to tie Bob with a Net 60.  Min obviously likes having Super Holes!  In Match Play, George Keller held off Mike Rolph 1 Up.  In Partners, Ron Ceglia Jr and Rich Fitzgerald defeated Greg Cavallo and Ed Korleski by +8, Ron Emma and Reese Evans came from behind to nip Joe Musella and Dave Perry by the Tiebreaker and Doug Conway and Larry Thiry edged out Ron Ceglia Sr and Shane DeLeon by +5 before Larry "imploded" after the Match was over.

May 11, 2013

We had a good turnout of 23 people at Spooky Brook and most of us played without rain although the skies were gray.  Joe Musella shot a cool 64 even though his round was "ruined" by a 5 on #8 (just ask Joe).  Joe played steady golf and could have easily shot two or three shots better if he made a few more putts from inside 3 feet.  His shot of the day was on #12.  His ball was 3 inches from a tree trunk in the right rough and he had to stand with his head in between a few tree branches.  The ball was buried in 5 inches of rough and from 135 yards, he hit it to 2 feet...and made a smooth par.  Almost half the field beat net par and 71 was the beer line.  Mike Jeffries got off to a fast start and held on to beat Dave Perry 4 & 3.

May 8, 2013

Despite the heavy rain and threatening skies, all nine guys showed up at Neshanic Valley (Ridge/Meadow) and we didn't have a drop of rain.  Shane DeLeon cleaned up again, seems like the usual result, nipping out Min (Super Hole) Minutello by 2 strokes.  He also had a 15 foot eagle putt, which to put it kindly, he misread.

May 4, 2013

It was a sunny, cool day, upper 50's at Green Knoll. Ron Emma wasn't very cool, actually he had the very hot play. Ron finished in first, shot a net 66 with a net 29 on the back. Ron was in ever pot except the front 9 and sandies. It certainly was a big pay off. George Keller and Min Minutello were the only others to finish below net par. There was a debate back at the bar about what live things you can touch in the hazard. Thanks Joe for clearing that up.

In Partners the Bobbies continue to roll along, beating Mike Jeffries and Jim Rinaldi +7. Also George Keller and Shawn Smith made a good turn around from last year's first round and beat Dan Price and John Rutigliano +4. In match play Ed Korleski beat Dennis Grote 2 & 1.

Mansour Rismanchi has now completed his six qualifying rounds. Time to get your votes in.

May 1, 3 and 5, 2013 - Naples Invitational

Mike Rolph continued his good play in the last 3 rounds of the Inaugural Naples Invitational.  He won at Bear's Paw by 10, Stoneybrook by 2 and Royal Tee (King/Prince) by 4.

May 1, 2013

A beautiful day and some very good scores at Farmstead (Lakeview/Clubview).  Mark Schuler had a big day with 74, net 64, nipping out Shane DeLeon and Min Minutello by 2 strokes.  It was Min's 2,500th DGA Round!!!!  Mark also won the 50/50 and several other prizes in the Morris Plains Rotary Outing.  Shane DeLeon defeated Dan Drice 6 & 4 in Match Play.

April 29, 2013

Michael Rolph was on fire on the back 9 at Forest Glen (Naples, FL) shooting a gross 37 (1 over par) for a 10 shot victory over Larry Thiry and 20 shots over Frank Thiry-DGA.  Shot of the Day:  Fred Thiry's 130 yard 2nd shot from the coquina to 4 feet on the 17th green and a 1 putt par.

April 27, 2013

It was a perfect day for golf at Warrenbrook.  It was sunny and upper 60's.  The course was running well and the greens were faster than we have been playing...which caused some issues for some players...like the 7th green where several players putt off the green because of the impossible pin position...or a couple of players who had putts pop out of the hole because the metal lining wasn't deep enough in the hole.  Greg Cavallo started with a Net 29 on the front nine and held on for a 2 shot win over 5 players.  Greg had a Johnny (29-40) as did Dennis Grote (42-29) and Rich Fitzgerald (35-47).  In Match Play, Shane DeLeon defeated 3 & 1 and Jim Rinaldi defeated Ron Ceglia Jr 4 & 3.  In Partners, Dennis Grote and Bruce Rapp rallied on the back 9 to beat Min Minutello and Luke Wolters +4.

April 24, 2013

We got a very nice spring day at Neshanic Valley (Meadow/Ridge) with sun and temps in the low 70's...until the end of the round when the clouds rolled in and the wind kicked up.  Reese Evans sprinted to the tee to catch his group and won by 2 shots with a net 70.  In Match Play, Dan Price won 3 straight holes on the back 9 to eliminate the defending champion, Doug Conway, 3 & 2.

April 20, 2013

On a mostly cloudy, breezy and cool day at Quail Brook, it was the Dennis and Luke show.  They won all by $16.50 of the money.  Dennis Grote shot a blistering net 65 to beat Luke Wolters by 3 shots.  However, Luke won more money because he had 4 Birdies and 4 Net Eagles and tied with 2 Greenies, 9 Net Birdies and 2 Sandys.  In Match Play, Ron Ceglia Jr. defeated Bob Keller 3 & 2.  Bob Babetski had a Johnny (35-45).

April 17, 2013

We had a pleasant day at Flanders Valley (Blue/White) except for the golf that is.  The weather was sunny and pleasant but most of us had some trouble - mostly with the bare spots off the fairway (don't hit it there GK3!).  Ron Ceglia Jr walked away with an easy 3 shot win.  Ron Ceglia Sr could have won if he had played any golf on the front side.  Most of us played in under 4 hours.

April 13, 2013

The DGA had 7 teams entered for the Somerset County 2 Man Welcome Back event at Neshanic Valley (Meadows/Lake).  Dennis Grote and Ron Ceglia Jr shot net 63 to win the DGA competition as well as 1st Place Flight A Net.  Jim Rinaldi and Rich Fitzgerald finished last in DGA but 1st in Flight C Gross with a 79

And in Naples, FL, it was a typical April day at Forest Glen....hot, humid and 85.  It was a perfect coming out party for Larry Thiry.  There was a lot of rust in Larry's game but that is understandable and it was great to see him on the course again.  His tee shot on the 1st hole went OB however.  Then on the 13th, he hit 6 tee shots.  Greg Cavallo found Larry's 1st ball in the woods but when he went to punch out, it hit a tree and went OB.  Smooth 9.  No one really played well as an 82 tied for 1st.

April 10, 2013

The results are finally in after some shabby scorecard keeping by some of our seasoned members. It always a good idea to keep a net AND gross card while you are on the course.

It was a pleasant, warm day at Neshanic Valley. We were able to get four groups out and just the last group caught the brunt of the rain. Luke Wolters gets his first win of the year with a solid Net 68 and a second place finish on the back. He was in the Birdies, Net Birdies and Net Eagle pots as well. There was a three way tie for second, between Reese Evan, Jim Rinaldi and Mark Schuler with Net 69.

There were some valuable lessons to be learned that day, 1. Never do your gross card at the bar and 2. Never go back to the tee to hit a provisional if you have already left the tee box. Who would think those two things would ever happen?

April 6, 2013 - Opening Day

It was a cold, brisk but sunny for opening day at Green Knoll. The day started in the high 30's but did get pleasant later in the day with balmy temps in the 40's. We had a good turn out for opening day with 21 players. The colder weather didn't seem to effect our opening day winner Ron Ceglia Sr. Ron shot 34/35 and was the only player under par. Shane DeLeon kept up his steady play and if it wasn't for a triple bogey on 17 and 18 he may have challenged Ron for the top spot. He did take his two favorite pots, net birdies and net eagles. Bob Babetski gets a Johnny (48-38).

April 3, 2013

The DGA kicked off the season at Quail Brook on another cool and windy day.  Shane DeLeon, as usual, led the way by 4 shots over Jim Rinaldi.  Ron Ceglia Jr. led the equity pot with 14 and also had a Johnny (43-56).  Mansour Rismanchi and Min Minutello only had 2 equities each.
March 30, 2013

We finally got a beautiful spring day at Quail Brook...and the winning scores reflected the improved playing conditions.  Shane DeLeon shot a net 66 for a 2 shot win over 3 players.  Jim Petronchak shot 2 over par 74 gross and had 4 Birdies and 4 Greenies...and was 1 under par in the Par 3 Gross and Net Pots.  Ed Korleski came out of winter hibernation and recorded a Johnny (35-46)

March 27, 2013

It was mostly sunny and breezy for an afternoon round at Quail Brook.  Mark Schuler won by 2 shots over Dave Perry.  Doug Conway started Birdie, Birdie but couldn't sustain the momentum.

March 23, 2013

Another cool and windy day at Spooky Brook, but fortunately a rather quick round.  A 3 way tie with Ceglia Sr, Minutello and Schuler recording 72's.

March 16, 2013

We managed to beat the snow and were off Green Knoll by 12:20pm or so.  Shane DeLeon won by 5 shots over Shawn Smith.

March 10, 2013

Shane DeLeon nipped Min Minutello by 1 shot at Rivers Edge.  Shane had a net 75 despite a 9 on the last hole.  Min was the only DGA member not to have an Equity Stroke.  That has to be some kind of record.  Frank Thiry had a Super Johnny (36-52) while George Keller (33-45) and Bob Nowark (48-38) had Johnnys.  In the 1st ever Commissioners Cup, the Seniors came from behind to beat the Juniors 11.5  - 6.5.  The final 2 Senior Groups (Min Minutello and George Keller & George Nolan and Mark Schuler) won 7.5 of the available 8 points.

March 9, 2013

We got a beautiful day at Crow Creek with temps in the low 60's and reduced wind.  The two "locals" took 1st and 2nd...George Keller shot net 69 and George Nolan shot net 70.  With the net 70, George Nolan won the "Mini-Myrtle" Tournament by 1 shot over Mike Jeffries with a two day total of 142.  Three Johnnys were recorded....Ron Emma (44-33), Shane DeLeon (51-40 with a 14 on the 5th hole) and Des Sinclair (41-51).

March 8, 2013

Another sunny and windy day in Myrtle Beach.  We played Barefoot - Fazio and it proved to be a challenge....except for Shane DeLeon.  Shane shot a net 68 to win by 4 shots and win or split a lot of pots.

March 7, 2013

The DGA played the "new" Pine Lakes and had only 4 players break net 80.  The greens were a bit slick especially for 2 members who 6-putt a hole.  Mile Jeffries won with a net 75 by 1 shot over Mark Schuler.

March 6, 2013

Ten DGA descended on River Hills for an 18 hole round.  Our "host", George Nolan,  won by 3 shots over Jim Rinaldi.  John Rutigliano had a Super Johnny (59-37) and Mark Schuler (34-45) and Des Sinclair (48-37) had Johnnys.  Juhn Rut started his year with a Par 4 on the 1st hole and then a 10 over par 15 on the 2nd hole.

Three DGA played 9 holes in the late afternoon at River Hills as a separate DGA round.  Doug Conway eked out awin with a net 40 by avoiding double digit hole scores.

March 2, 2013

It was a cloudy, breezy and cool day at Spooky Brook.  It was good to play another course than Green Knoll.  Joe Musella, Bruce Rapp and Shane DeLeon each shot net 69 to tie for 1st.  Everyone else was over net par.  This was the debut of the Gross and Net Par 3 Pots and Joe Musella won both pots.

February 24, 2013

Three members played Green Knoll on Sunday after Saturday's "rainout".  Ron Ceglia Sr beat Shane "I could have won if I didn't make a 9 and a 10" DeLeon by 3 shots.

February 2, 2013

Some very interesting stuff in the cold at Green Knoll.  Temps in the 20's, frozen fairways and greens.  Jim Rinaldi on the 1st tee had the shortest drive ever, maybe.  He broke his tee and the ball landed right on the spot.  After taking an 8 on the hole, he proceeded to tie Ceglia Sr for 1st with a 75 and was the big winner.  Fitz had a Mega Johnny (65-45) and Dave Perry had a Johnny (48-36).

January 21, 2013

It was an OK weather day at Green Knoll.  It was cloudy and 20's when we started and reached 30 degrees by the time we finished.  Everyone struggled to hold greens and get the ball in the hole.  Ron Ceglia Sr made more putts than anyone and won with a net 81 !!  And he won by 3 shots over Dave Perry, Bob Babetski and Min Minutello.  SuperJohnnys were recorded by Dennis Grote (51-36) and Shane DeLeon (56-38).

January 19, 2013

A good day at Green Knoll.  Mid 30's and then Upper 40's by the time we finished.  Min Minutello "nosed out" Babo by 6 strokes on his way to shooting his age and carding an eagle on the par five fifth.  Only one Johnny, Bruce (49-39)

January 12, 2013

It was a cloudy day on a very soggy Green Knoll.  Jim Rinaldi shot net 69 to nip Frank Thiry-DGA by 1 shot.  Des Sinclair had an erratic round but wound up with 3 Birdies, 2 Net Eagles, 9 Net Birdies and 3 Greenies on his way to a net 80.  Mark Schuler had 3 Sandys.  Joe Musella had a Johnny (56-42).

January 5, 2013

Every winter, there is one guy who consistently uses their bloated handicap to their advantage.  This winter it is "the Guy", Bruce Rapp.  Bruce won again at Cream Ridge by nipping Shane DeLeon and Min Minutello by 1 shot with net 71.  Shane had the 1st Johnny of the year with net 42-30.
