DGA a NJ Golf Club
November 2, 2019 (Spooky Brook)
The day started with temps in the mid-30's and a 90 minute frost delay. Thiry, F and Korleski tie with Net 68's, but 3rd place Jeffries wins the most $$. Griffith wins Birdies(3) and Net Eagles(2) on the back nine (holes 11 - 16) by going Birdie, Triple, Birdie, Triple, Birdie, Double. In the Partners Final, Jeffries/Rinaldi defeat Connors/Rismanchi + 10.
Min ("I can't compete") Minutello wins by 4 shots over Reese. The greens were very fast and the course conditions were superb during this opening round of the Caliendo Winter Tour. Min finishes 3rd in the league so definitely a winner. Welcome to Dennis Grote in his first time playing in the league and playing the course. Some highlights (low lights) Mike Jeffries has 3 sandys - only 2 counted since he had a match sandy despite an 11 on 13th hole. Jim Rinaldi had a 5-putt to start his round on the difficult par 3 4th hole.
Bruce Rapp shoots a stellar 65 to nip Mike Jeffries and Reese Evans by 1 shot. Congrats to Reese who wins the individual championship 2 and 1 over Andrew in a hard fought match. Shot of the day - Andrew was down 4 going into the par 3 11th hole - he was in the front bunker and Reese was just on the back fringe - Andrew holes out for a birdie and double sandy to win a hole - Reese came right back with a birdie on 12 to half the hole. Andrew birdied 16 to pull within in but Reese had a par on 17 to close out the match. Andrew was the big money winner with 2 pots and the front nine. Frost delay to start but since a lot of groups ahead of us didn't show we got off pretty much one time. Cold to start and the first 3 or 4 greens were frozen for the early groups.
Ron Emma wins by 3 over Jim P on a windy cold day at Royce Brook - frozen greens to start and so many bunkers made the early holes very hard - no way to land the ball on the green and keep it out of a bunker. Welcome to Bruce Rapp as he makes his Caliendo debut and loves it! Despite the number of balls in greenside bunkers only 1 sandy.
Jim Rinaldi and Jim Petronchak return to form from their recent back issues. Jim Rinaldi wins by 3 shooting a gross 78 including 3 birdies - Petro follows his win in the Caliendo senior division with a 77 gross and 3 birdies. Weather was sunny but cold and the winds were stronger than forecast but did drop off later in the round. Charlie was wondering most of the round why he was giving Jim a shot when he was knocking down flag sticks. The winter rules definitely helped in the rough.
Nice day in the Winter League, after a long frost delay (no one saw any actual frost), Dennis Grote comes on strong on the last 9 to win by 2 over Ron Emma. Mr.89 makes the only birdie of the day with a chipin on a temp green.
After a little frost delay and some frozen greens at the start, Bob Babetski shoots a Net 66 for a 3 stroke win. Cold weather Hater, Ed Korleski comes in 2nd and wins the most money thanks to 3 Birdies. Team Polska were the only players under Par for the day. Dave Perry had some Bunker issues on the back nine highlighted by the six shots to get out on # 12.
Jim Rinaldi masters the fast greens for an easy 8 shot win. How to make a par 4 - from JR's playbook - drive in the fairway bunker, shank into the right rough, pitch from 100 yards to 2 feet - one put. Jim made a couple of other fantastic approach shots. He also finished tied for 2nd in the Caliendo in the Amateur division for a nice payday. Mike Jeffries had 3 greens including a birdie to go along with a not so smooth 9 on the 4th par 3. Terrific weather day for late November - shirtsleeves for most of the day.
On a cold and very windy Friday after Thanksgiving, Dave Perry feasts on 3 DGA'ers at Neshanic Valley. Dave pulled away from Korleski and Babetski with a back nine 33 where he birdied Lake #3 & #7. The big surprise is that he did this without any Beer (that we know of). Charlie Connors was the latest victim of #5 Ridge.
Dennis plays steady winning the front and tied the back for a 2 shot win over Jay. Greens were hard and fast on a sunny late fall day with just a little wind.
